Real Yield

What it means

Real yield describes the return on an interest-bearing asset after considering the effect of inflation. In market analysis, investors often look at inflation-adjusted government bond yields to understand how attractive those assets are in real purchasing-power terms.

Why it matters in live markets

Real yields are frequently discussed in relation to gold because gold does not normally generate interest income.

When real yields increase, interest-bearing assets may become relatively more attractive. When real yields decline, the opportunity-cost difference between those assets and gold may become smaller.

This relationship can be important, but it is not a fixed rule because currencies, risk sentiment, physical demand and other macro factors can also affect gold prices.

Key points

  • Real yields account for inflation or inflation expectations.
  • They differ from nominal bond yields.
  • Real yields are often monitored when analysing gold.
  • Higher real yields can increase the relative appeal of interest-bearing assets.
  • The relationship between real yields and gold can change with market conditions.

Example

If nominal bond yields remain stable while inflation expectations rise, the inflation-adjusted real yield may decline. Markets may then reassess the relative attractiveness of interest-bearing assets and non-yielding assets such as gold.

Where you will see it

You will usually see real yields discussed in bond-market analysis, central-bank commentary, inflation discussions and market analysis involving gold and other interest-rate-sensitive assets.
