MACD Crossover

What it means

A MACD crossover happens when the indicator’s main line crosses its smoothed signal line. The same event appears in the histogram as a movement through zero.

A crossover above the signal line shows that current measured momentum has moved above its recent average. A crossover below shows that it has moved beneath that average.

Why it matters in live markets

Crossovers can help identify changes in the pace or direction of measured momentum. Their significance depends on the wider price chart.

In a strong trend, a crossover may reflect a temporary pullback. In a range, repeated crossovers may occur without a sustained move. During high volatility, crossovers may appear and reverse quickly.

Key points

  • A crossover occurs when the MACD and signal lines intersect.
  • It represents a change in their momentum relationship.
  • The histogram crosses zero at the same time.
  • Crossovers can occur frequently in sideways markets.
  • A MACD crossover is not a guaranteed reversal, continuation or instruction.

Example

The MACD line may move above its signal line while price remains inside a wider trading range. The crossover shows a short-term momentum change, but the wider range may still define the broader market structure.
